A Short History - XBOX 360 Homebrew Development *To Be Updated*

April, 2009 - Dashboard 2.0.7371.0 - JTAG was discovered and a homebrew solution developed eventually.

August 11, 2009 - Dashboard 2.0.8498.0 - You just lost the game! The fun was over for all who updated to this version and beyond. There would remain no solution for two more years, and as a result very little homebrew software was developed - Certainly not enough to warrant jtag'ing an old console, as there is no LIVE functionality. The community still does not have a version of XBMC, much less any emulators that aren't available for other consoles.

August 28, 2011 - Fast forward two long, boring, bleak, depressing years later: News of the Reset Glitch Hack started making the rounds, confirmed as real! Unlike 2009, the persons who discovered this method claim it can not be closed off by a simple dashboard update. As of this writing (9/17), there still isn't anything they can do with it yet in terms of homebrew and backups. Modchips would have to be developed so anyone can use it, as the original way of exploiting the console is quite expensive and not for the beginner. Xell Reloaded would be developed around the same time, which is what the console boots into.

August 31, 2011 - Xecuter NAND-X and Xecuter CoolRunner developed; Maximus Stinger Add-On board developed by Team Maximus. Also, a really cheap media player was developed a few days prior to this (FFPLay) this is still very early in the development stage and just another means to an end.

September 6, 2011 - Things are starting to pick up! The 360-Clip announced, the x360glitchip announced (For the french market, but apparently its going to be sold here in the states too), and the EDGE 360 GX chip/nand flasher ($30, a bit pricey..) also announced.

September 8, 2011 - Even more chips announced: Matrix Glitcher 360 - Developed by Team Matrix. Very popular during the PS2 days, but since disappeared until now..This is probably the one to get, priced at $25; Along with the Matrix NAND Programmer (Priced at $35) Also announced is the SQUIRT360, which claims to boot a console in 5 seconds or less, to be an ACTEL-based chip, and be cheaper then the competion. However, they still have yet to make any further announcements as of this writing.

September 13, 2011 - Samples of the x360glitchip shown in a video. The console boots to Xell Reloaded between 4 and 20 seconds, averaging 9 seconds. Pricing is said to be $35 and looks to be a 7-wire install..Not very good price, but this is the first real evidence seen of a console in action with a chip installed.

September 16, 2011 - RxE developed by TeamFSD, which is the dashboard/menu that will most likely be on every console by the end of all of this development. This is a complete overhaul of the original Freestyle Dash by the same team, but still has all of the same features. As of now, there is really no way to use this yet.

September 20, 2011 - Xeno360 chip announced. Matrix Glitcher Speed Test - 18.6 Seconds average boot time.

September 24, 2011 - New version of Xell Reloaded. Squirt360 prototype pictures released.

September 28, 2011 - Proof of concept posted for dual booting official dash (Live-safe) and a homebrew image using Cygnos360 v2. Thx to antman1 from Cygnos360 forums.

Notes:

If you have a JTAG-Compatible dashboard from 2009, there's really nothing keeping you from updating to the current dashboard anymore.
