..More like a history about this movie. But read on.
Very rarely these days are remakes decent - Case in point of Rob Zombie and his ideas on "Halloween" - completely turned me off to the concept.
Even more rare then that are remakes better then the original - Especially when the original sucked. How they were able to get the approval and funding to remake this movie is beyond me. It took a production company with balls of steel to take this big of a risk.
A little bit of background into this movie:
The original "I spit on your grave" was actually made in the late '70s and was called "Day of the woman". The acting was terrible, the rape scene went on and eventually got boring (as strange as that is to say), and the revenges plotted and carried out were mediocre at best.
But. Being that the 70s and 80s were a time when extreme violence in movies was kind of a new thing (Italian Horror and the Exploitation genres with directors like Deodato/Fulci/D'Amato were coming around), somehow it ended up on the UK's banned list, as a 'Video Nasty'. I've seen hundreds of old italian horror films, Day of the woman far from qualified ending up on the list. Demand for the movie skyrocketed based on the "You can't have it" form of marketing - See the South Park Episode "Cartmanland" for more details).
Its the most successful form of advertisement then, and this hasn't changed - The movie called "Grotesque" made in Japan about 2 years ago ended up on this list, suddenly everyone in the loop wanted it; Before that, it was just another exploitation movie that Japan turns out every other day. Anyways, I've had the original movie for about 10 years, and it was only because of the banned list that I heard of the damn thing. If I could go back in time and ask for my money back from the bootlegger who sold it to me, I would turn him upside-down, shake him by the ankles and see what comes out.
Needless to say, the original was barely known at the time. The actors went on to do nothing later on, it made zero in profit, and the name "I spit on your grave" was only because some jerk in America, I think he's that fuckhead named "Jerry Gross" (Who's been dead for 10 years) bought the rights to re-release it and kept the renaming rights on the stipulations.
..Which brings us to the remake from this year. I liked it, and here's why:
I can tell right off the bat that the director watched every Saw movie and was heavily influenced by the "Assisted Suicide" and "Ironic Death" concepts, that was cool. The deaths were brutal, the acting spot-on; The rape scene was pretty nauseating, but it also made for enjoying the aftermath. I have a penchant for revenge movies. Plus I lived in the deep south where this all takes place and had my run-ins with a fair share of rednecks. I can sympathize with her ;)
I wont give any spoilers away, but it was well worth the time spent watching it.
Again, I never imagined a remake could be good - but when the original was terrible enough, there wasn't too much they could do to make it worse.
